Whether it’s football, hockey, or martial arts, a mouthguard is part of the uniform.  In many sports coaches make it mandatory but in others it is optional but generally recommended.  Statistics show that you are 60 times more likely to suffer from injury to the teeth without a mouthgard than someone who wears a mouthguard!  It helps cushion the blows to prevent broken teeth as well as reducing the severity of a concussion!   Not only the obvious of contact sports but also gymnastics or skateboarding are known to have caused injuries to the face and mouth.

There are three types of mouthguards to choose from.  One is a ready-made generic mouthguard , another is a “boil and bite” type (both over-the-counter), and the third is the custom made mouthguard from your dental office.  All three provide adequate protection to reduce the risks of dental injury but vary in comfort and price.  If your child is in braces, the orthodontist has standard, ready-made mouthguards available or can make a custom fit one depending upon your preference.

Care for your mouthguard is simple too; brush it with toothpaste to keep it clean.  Rinse it before and after using it and keep it safe in a breathable container away from pets!
